Officials confirmed that there was no winner of the jackpot during the Oct. 21 draw for Mega Millions. After the lottery draw was rolled over, the Friday's jackpot has risen to be worth $224 million, making it the largest pot of the year.
Tuesday's winning numbers were 5, 35, 37, 41 and 66, with a Mega Ball of 11. The next draw will be held on Oct. 24, 11:00 p.m. ET and winners may opt to avail of the $224 million annuity or $137 million cash option.
The last winner of the Mega Millions jackpot was on Aug. 22 when a lone winner from California took home the prize worth $180 million, reported Lalate.com.
"The excitement is building as the Mega Millions jackpot continues to roll. No ticket matched all six numbers in Tuesday night's drawing (5, 35, 37, 41 and 66, plus the Mega Ball of 11), so the estimated jackpot for the Friday, October 24, drawing is $224 million (cash value $137 million)," said officials on the growing prize money.
MLive noted that there 449,591 total winners nationwide following the Oct. 21 results.
"The largest jackpot this year, and third-highest Mega Millions jackpot ever, was a $414 million prize split between winners in Florida and Maryland on March 18," added officials regarding Friday's lottery draw.
According to the Mega Millions website, the Mega Millions draws are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 pm ET.
As for the game's mechanics, players will pick a total of 6 numbers from two separate pools -- five numbers from 1 to 75 and one from 1 to 15. You win the jackpot if you are able to match all six winning numbers during your enrolled drawing. Players may also opt for the Easy Pick option where you are issued a set of randomly selected, computer generated numbers.
Jackpot winners can select from two payment options, the first being the annuity where the lucky winner will be given an immediate payout followed by 29 annual payments, each 5% bigger than the previous amount. The second option is the cash-out option where winners will receive a one-time lump payment that equals the amount in the Mega Millions jackpot prize pool.
Mega Millions is played in 43 states as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to the grand jackpot, players have chances of winning other prices with values ranging from $1 to $1,000,000.
