Originally created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Disney's 2012 adaptation of "John Carter" did not turn out to be very successful -- the Mickey Mouse powerhouse was reported to suffer a financial setback.

According to Screen Rant, the film earned only $73 million domestically and because of the financial setback and a few other reasons, Rich Ross was ousted from being Disney Studios' head.

A recent statement by Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc. announced that it has reacquired the franchise's movie, television and merchandise rights from Disney. The creating company revealed that it "will be seeking a new studio to continue this seminal Sci-Fi adventure."

Now that sounds like a reboot -- or maybe a sequel -- is coming right in the near future.

Burroughs' reclaim of the franchise was rather odd, as many of the late author's works were in America's public domain. Coming Soon cited some of them being "A Princess of Mars" and "Warlord of Mars." A work listed in such public domain allows virtually anybody to remake it as desired. But this time, with "John Carter," interested parties need to seek approval from ERB Inc. first.

Perhaps the company values the franchise that much.

President James Sullos is hopeful of the manifestation of the company's plans. He believes that the new "John Carter" will be "another major franchise to entertain worldwide audiences of all ages."

Did Disney actually ruin the franchise?

Not at all, because "John Carter" did well internationally. With a production budget amounting to $250 million, the film surpassed such capital with total worldwide earnings at $284.1 million. Yet The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the poor domestic performance led to Disney's cancellation of follow-up attempts.

The outlet added that Taylor Kitsch's involvement in the possible reboot is uncertain. Sullos indicated that no further plans are out as of the moment, since an interested studio must come up first. He told THR, "We have no preconceived notion at this time of how this adventure will be further advanced."

ERB Inc. was founded in 1923 by writer Edgar Rice Burroughs. To date, the company maintains ownership to the author's literary works, and informs overseeing their mass production in publishing, film, television, theatrical stage productions, licensing and merchandising.

Disney's adaptation was directed by Finding Nemo's Andrew Stanton, wrote IGN. The cast included Taylor Kitsch as John Carter, Samantha Morton as Sola, Thomas Haden Church as Tal Hajus, Lynn Collins as Dejah Thoris, Willem Dafoe as Tars Tarkas and Mark Strong II as Matai Shang. Other cast members were listed by Rotten Tomatoes.

Perhaps fans wanting to see John back in Mars may need to be patient for now.
