It looks like Apple accidentally posted screenshots of the upcoming iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 on the iTunes Store on Wednesday, reports CNN.

The images, which were later removed, showed specifications of the new iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 in an official user guide to Apple's iOS 8. Both devices and new details of the latest operating system are expected to be unveiled Oct. 16, 2014 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET at Cupertino, California (live stream here). CEO Tim Cook and team are expected to have plenty to discuss in the event, including the new Macs, the latest Apple Pay, and the release of the OS X Yosemite.

From what can be seen in the image, it looks like both the new tablets are getting Touch ID scanner.

"Discovered by 9to5Mac, the screen shots show that the new tablets will both gain TouchID fingerprint sensors, which are currently only available on the iPhone. They also seem to verify that the latest update to the company's mobile operating system, iOS 8.1, is coming Thursday," noted CNN.

However, the physical design of the new iPad models resemble the pre-existing iPad tablets already out in the market. An article from CNET added, "The leak also reveals that Burst Mode, which lets users take "rapid-fire" photos, will be available for the iPad Air 2."

According to PC World, "The iPad Air 2 is expected to also get an upgrade to the A8 processor, which were introduced in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The chip is faster and more power-efficient than the A7 chip."

Apple hopes that the upcoming release of the new iPads will boost sales for the company. CNET said that the Cupertino-based tech giant has suffered from slow sales of its tablet line.

"Sales of the iPad have slowed as consumers have increasingly turned to smartphones. While the iPad remains a top seller in the tablet market, it hasn't radically changed since the first model in 2010. Unlike smartphones, which get replaced every two years or less, consumers are happy holding on to their iPads for much longer," explained CNET.

Apple is known to be secretive when it comes to the release of their new products, so this leak is quite unexpected. Engadget points out that this incident could be related to Google's Nexus -- making headlines.

"While the leak may seem like a careless mistake, the more cynical out there will note that this happened just moments after Google announced its latest Nexus devices. It might be a coincidence, or the notoriously media savvy company might be trying to push the competition out of the news cycle as fast as possible," said Engadget.
