Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's release cost is much higher than everyone thought.
In a report by The Guardian, Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, shared how potential teams will have to go to great lengths to acquire the Portuguese from Real Madrid. Despite previous talks that Ronaldo was unhappy in his current team and is eyeing on moving to Manchester United, his stellar price might hinder a possible deal.
Ronaldo garnered 118 goals in 292 appearances between 2003 and 2009 with Manchester United under the supervision of Sir Alex Ferguson, resulting to one Champions League title and three Premier League titles. A deal for Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford has been described as "possible", but Manchester has to go over the hurdle of affording the second most expensive player of all time.
The 29-year-old striker reportedly has a release clause in his contract worth €1 billion. Mendes said, "I no longer get calls from anyone asking about Cristiano. It's not worth them calling to ask for it. The price is that stated in his release clause - €1bn." Mendes seemed to be exaggerating about what more Ronaldo can offer in the next decade. The agent shared how Ronaldo will finish his career at Madrid, probably past the age of 40.
According to SkySports.com, Ronaldo's agent said, "I'm sure that he will beat his personal record if he does not have any physical problems. For Cristiano, nothing is impossible. He is going to continue evolving and improving until he is 40. When he finishes it will be impossible for anyone to beat his records. Notice how Cristiano is a winger, he's not a striker, and his numbers are outrageous. He plays very far from goal and has to make significant efforts to arrive into the box. For that, he deserves even more credit for what he achieves."
He continued, "We will never find one like [Ronaldo]. It is true he is getting better and will continue to improve until he is 40. Cristiano has no limits. Besides being the best footballer in history, he is the greatest athlete of all time. There will be no one like him in the next 500 years."
Mendes added that although Ronaldo showed hints of being unhappy with the Red Devils, he will most likely retire in Madrid.
"United are in his heart and he is respectful of people who show him affection but he is in Madrid to the end." Mendes revealed.
Although Mendes's statements may somewhat be considered outlandish, Ronaldo has been spectacular so far at the start of the season. In six games, he scored 13 goals with three hat-tricks.
