Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant will miss six to eight weeks of the regular NBA season due to a foot fracture.

In a report by Yahoo! Sports, the reigning MVP said to his team after their practice on October 11, 2014, that he experienced some discomfort in his right foot. He underwent imaging studies and was found to have a Jones fracture. A Jones fracture affects the fifth metatarsal of the foot. Durant will most likely undergo surgery and is expected to be back on his feet anytime between the middle of November and early December 2014.

The OKC Thunder are still deciding how to deal with the recent injury. Sam Presti, general manager of the Thunder said as quoted by Yahoo Sports, "We are in the process of collaboratively evaluating the most appropriate next steps with Kevin, his representatives, and Thunder medical personnel. Until a course of action is determined, we are unable to provide a timeline specific to Kevin's case."

Usually in the NBA, teams opt for players with a Jones fracture to undergo surgery, which involves putting a screw into the foot to stabilize the area around the metatarsal of the foot and hasten recovery. According to SB Nation, the Thunder and Durant have not fully confirmed how they intend to treat the injury but they are leaning towards surgery. Presti said, "Jones fracture is, from what I've been told, the most common surgical procedure performed on NBA players as of late. There's enough of a body of work to look at an average recovery time."

The team will still set a timetable but Durant might be missing about 20 games, which will not be entirely devastating for the Thunder, SB Nation added. Depending on the severity of Durant's injury and how quickly he can cope with the subsequent rehabilitation program, his return may come sooner or later. Also, players who suffered a Jones fracture have a higher rate of re-injury. Russell Westbrook is expected to cover while Durant rests.

A Jones fracture is becoming more common among NBA players, SB Nation recalled. Brook Lopez of the Brooklyn Nets suffered a similar injury in 2011 and 2014 in which he had to miss the last four months of the season. Los Angeles Lakers rookie Julius Randle had the same fracture when he was in high school and the team is cautious about a possible re-injury. Nemanja Nedovic of the Golden State Warriors also had a Jones fracture and had to skip summer games, including the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
