We bet our money you've never heard Alba Berlin, but you ought to know them now after they upset the San Antonio Spurs to win a preseason game, 94-93.
As defending NBA champions, the Spurs have a target on their backs, but this loss will have you thinking that even teams outside America dream to take them down, Fox Sports reported. This is after the German Basketball Bundesliga's fifth-ranked team won on Wednesday.
The Bleacher Report said the game was a rarity. First, it is uncommon for teams from the U.S. league to lose to a foreign team, let alone a defending champion. Second, the Spurs lost with a buzzer-beater, delivered by Jamel McLean from 15 feet away, to hand a loss to the Spurs on their exhibition opener.
It was an entertaining game, My San Antonio said, explaining that the non-bearing game saw Alba coming back from an early 16-point runaway. For the win—and the bragging rights—McLean produced from a steal by Reggie Redding.
An Associated Press report on ABC News said that Redding, a former Villanova guard who contributed 12 points, made his three-pointer with 5.1 seconds remaining, for 93-92. He then stole Tim Duncan's inbound pass to set up for McLean, who hurried down the court and ended with a floater.
"...I looked at the clock and knew I had to get a play in," said McLean, who racked up 18 points and 10 rebounds, as quoted by the report. "I saw it go in. It felt really good. I didn't know how to celebrate."
The final steal was the last of 24 from the NBA team, the Bleacher Report said. The Spurs also managed to convert only 4 of 16 three-point shots in their visit to Germany, their very first on-court action since their Finals faceoff against Miami Heat.
It was in the fourth quarter when Spurs coach Gregg Popovich fully attempted to secure a win, positioning Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard, My San Antonio noted.
The team was about to get a sure win as Parker headed for the foul line with just 14.1 seconds on the clock, but he missed. That came after a good showing of quickness and a production of 28 points on 13 shots, My San Antonio said. That is double Duncan and Leonard's 14 points a piece.
The last points of the game instead came from the home team—three from Redding and two from McLean, a former Xavier forward.
"First game of the season and we're all a little rusty. We need to play with each other a bit more," Ginobili said in the AP report. "We just played poorly and they had a great game."
Popovich agreed. "We really wanted to win, but Alba kicked our ass. They did a great job," he told My San Antonio. Let's see if they can win versus Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday.
