After all the rumors that went around about a possible "Ghostbusters 3,"  the movie's once-speculated director, Paul Feig, finally confirmed on Twitter that the latest installment is truly on its way.

His tweet also mentioned who he is writing the sequel with and confirmed another rumor that it will involve a funny female cast.

E! Online recalls that the film's original lead star, Bill Murray, stated weeks ago that it would be fun to see an all-female cast of comediennes take the lead for the movie.

No one knew then that the 64-year-old actor was already hinting what would really happen for the latest installment of the "Ghostbuster" franchise.

The actresses' names mentioned by the veteran actor included Kristen Wiig, Emma Stone, Linda Cardellini, and "The Heat" star Melissa McCarthy.

In response, the 44-year-old McCarthy felt flattered that she was preferred by someone as legendary as Murray. She added that she would do any project with the other ladies suggested.

If things fall together right for the movie, making another comedy under the Feig and McCarthy team-up, then there is a high chance "Ghostbusters 3" would also be a smash hit just like their hilarious movies in the past, "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids."

According to Digital Spy, "The Heat," which also had Sandra Bullock on the lead, earned $229 million as a 2013 summer movie.

The third highly anticipated installment of the original 80s hit went through a long process of development for the past 20 years. It suffered a major delay along the way when Harold Ramis, star and co-writer of the movies, passed away this year.

Besides Ramis, the cast of the first two "Ghostbusters" movies include Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver.

Fortunately, things started progressing again for the project. Its original director, Ivan Reitman, is reportedly signed to work as producer instead, while Feig takes on the director's chair.

Things are still unclear how the original cast will be included in the freshest chapter of the movie franchise. Despite Murray's disinterest to be in it, Aykroyd feels the opposite and has been very open in having a part in the third installment.

Previous reports mentioned that Sony will begin filming in Spring next year. No release date has been shared yet.

Meanwhile, Feig's current movie "Spy" is another action comedy with Melissa McCarthy on the forefront again.
