Do you take more pictures with your phone's front camera than the one on the back? Well, you're not alone. The selfie craze has exploded ever since smartphone manufacturers began including said front-facing cameras on their devices. And those same manufacturers are starting to adjust their designs accordingly. HTC today announced a new phone, the Desire Eye, featuring a giant front-facing camera that is reportedly the most powerful of its kind to ever grace a smartphone.
Pricing & Availability
The Desire Eye isn't meant as a rival to HTC's flagship 'One' line of smartphones, rather, it is a mid-range device that doesn't feature the latest and greatest specs--though, it certainly isn't cheap, either. The phone will reportedly be available through AT&T sometime before the end of the year, most likely in time for the holiday shopping season. HTC did not announce pricing info today.
Design
The Desire Eye's best camera is on the front, not a first in the phone world, but certainly noteworthy. That best camera is a 13-megapixel shooter, the highest resolution front-facing camera ever on a phone. And there's good news for those worried about not being able to snap high quality photos with the back camera--they're the same camera. Users get autofocus, dual LED flashes and 1080p video capability on both the front AND the back cameras. Pretty cool.
The display on the Desire Eye is a 1080p, full HD screen and measures 5.2 inches across. It also boasts a high-end processor in the Snapdragon 801 to go along with 2GB of RAM. The exterior of the phone is solid plastic, but the two-toned colorways shown off by HTC look nice and don't look 'plasticky' at all. It's also waterproof, which is always welcome. The Desire Eye is IPX7 rated for water resistance and can be submerged in one meter of water for up to 30 consecutive minutes.
Software
The Desire Eye runs the same blend of Android 4.4 KitKat layered underneath HTC's Sense 6.0 OS skin, which is one of the least obtrusive such skins on the market. The Snapdragon processor combined with ample RAM should keep performance nice and smooth.
We'd be surprised if the Desire Eye wasn't in AT&T stores before Black Friday.
