A clueless child handed out packets of heroin to pals at a day care facility in Delaware.
According to Fox News, the packets of heroin were contained in a backpack which the little girl's mom gave her to use. Thinking it was candy, the child reportedly passed out the drug packets to other students at Beginner's Choice Daycare.
The child's teacher, implementing a school rule which prohibits outside things from being brought inside the classroom, asked the kids to keep the packets inside their pockets, reported USA Today.
The director and owner of Beginner's Choice Daycare, Alisa Johnson, knew of the drug packets when she was reportedly informed by another employee who saw them. Johnson said that she took the packets of powder to the Selbyville police and was informed that they were indeed heroin.
The Delaware State Police said that the girl's backpack contained 249 packets of heroin, each pack weighing 3.735 grams, reported Fox News.
Fortunately, none of the children consumed anything in the packets, USA Today said in the report, quoting Johnson. However, police and paramedics still checked the day care. Some children were also taken to the hospital for examination, added Fox News.
The 4-year-old girl's mother, Ashley Tull, 30, was arrested and charged with maintaining a drug property and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, Fox News stated.
Aside from her 4-year-old daughter, Tull also has a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, said USA Today.
Tull was released on $6,000 bail but a no contact order was issued. The three children are currently in custody of a relative.
Johnson, who has managed Beginner's Choice Daycare for six years, said that the girl's teacher deserves the credit for somehow containing the whole situation.
"If we didn't stop it here, she (the child) would have gone to school at 11:40 and could have passed it out at school. She just thought it was candy. She didn't know," USA Today quoted Johnson as saying.
"We did our best," she added. "A lot of kids' lives got saved. We kept them safe. Nobody got hurt."
According to HeroinBabies the short term effects of heroin include feelings of euphoria, dry mouth, warm flushing of the skin, slowed breathing, disturbed mental functioning and heavy extremities. Long term effects of the drug include heart infections, liver diseases, abscesses and pulmonary complications.
"3.5 million Americans aged 12 years and older have admitted to trying heroin at least once," the site added.
