Before its latest season has even officially started, AMC has renewed the Walking Dead for a sixth season, the network announced Tuesday.

The AMC drama has become the number one show on television for adults in the 18-49 demographic for the last two years, an impressive feat in the world of cable television. The show continues to break records with its viewership.

"We could not be more excited for Oct. 12th as we share new episodes of The Walking Dead with fans around the globe,"  AMC President Charlie Collier said in a statement.

"In advance of Sunday's Season Five premier, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life. There's plenty more dead ahead thanks to their impressive collective effort."

Scott Gimple was also confirmed to return as the series' show-runner and executive producer for Season 6. In addition to Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse will return as executive producers.

Record Breaking Continues

Season four of The Walking Dead wrapped in March and drew in roughly 15.7 million viewers, an upgrade from the 12.4 million viewers who watched the Season Three finale.

Moreover, the Season Four premier broke cable viewership records with 16.1 million people tuning in (including 10.4 million adults 18-49). Numbers continued to remain steady as the season continued, with an average 13.3 million viewers with 8.6 million 18-49 year old adults watching each episode, up 24 and 22 percent, respectively, from Season Three. This has effectively made the show the highest-rated show in cable history.

Spin-off Announced

The story of survivors of the zombie apocalypse has become so popular that AMC has decided that it is too much for one show to contain. A spin-off series was announced earlier in the summer and has already had a pilot episode ordered. The new show will feature an all new cast of characters and will be in an completely different setting from the original series. Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, will also be creating this new show.

While they wait for that show to get off the ground, zombie fans can watch The Walking Dead Season Five when it premiers on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. on AMC.
