The first movie adaptation of the bestselling book "Fifty Shades of Grey" has long finished filming but its first choice for the Christian Grey role, Charlie Hunnam, is still bombarded with the question: why did he turn his back on the film?
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 34-year-old actor made it clear that the reason why he gave up the male lead part of "Fifty Shades of Grey" was due to his extremely busy schedule back then.
According to E! Online, his getting cast for the kinky businessman character was in conflict with his work schedule on the hit TV series, "Sons of Anarchy," and with another movie he was set to do, "Crimson Peak." The actor wanted to put an end to all the spreading rumors that he was pressured or was just too afraid to get into such a racy character.
"There's nothing ever monetarily or fame-seeking or any of the other motivations that sometimes go hand-in-hand with this profession... It was very painful, and it was very difficult [decision]," he told Entertainment Weekly.
The rising actor had already given his word to "Fifty Shades of Grey" director Sam Taylor-Johnson but he had to let go of the project because of his "rookie mistake."
"All of a sudden, I'm getting all of these wonderful people approaching me and asking me to work with them. It's very hard to say no when you love and respect people. I just kind of made a bit of a rookie mistake in that one in biting off more than I could chew."
His role was eventually snagged by former Calvin Klein model, Jamie Dornan.
At the moment, Hunnam is shooting the final season of his FX show. He was also recently spotted taking a Harley Davidson for a ride with the rest of his biker pals around West Hollywood, The Daily Mail noted.
Starring Dornan and Dakota Johnson as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, respectively, the much awaited movie adaptation of E.L. James' book will be released a day before Valentine's Day 2015.
