Every year in the NBA there are the teams that everyone believes are playoff ready right from the start. But oftentimes there are many teams that flew well beneath many people's radar that actually take everyone by surprise. If the Miami Heat or Cleveland Cavaliers end up going to the NBA Finals, no one is going to be shocked; But here are the teams that maybe deserve a second consideration for attention once the season gets going.
Milwaukee Bucks
Let's start with the 19-year-old Giannis Antetokounmpo. This is a young player who has a huge amount of upside thanks to his combination of power and speed. The Bucks will be looking to mold and shape him into the next big thing for their franchise
Speaking of great potential, No. 2 overall draft pick Jabari Parker could very well end up being the perfect partner to Antetokounmpo, making for a nice one-two punch.
Throw in Josh Henson and Larry Sanders and it is clear that this is a team that is committed to rebuilding the franchise. It is not certain whether it will be happening this year, but regardless Milwaukee has a lot to look forward to with the upcoming season and beyond.
Denver Nuggets
There may not be a ton of buzz about them, but the Nuggets are not a team to sleep on.
The FIBA World Cup put the spotlight squarely on Kenneth Faried and why everyone seems to have rapidly forgotten about him is baffling. Ty Lawson has shown how great he is at point guard and if Danilo Gallinari is healthy at the start of the season these three will be part of a premier starting five.
Ironically the one thing that may leave them out of the playoffs is the fact they are in an incredibly difficult division. Last season the team was edged out by the Dallas Mavericks as they took the eighth seed. Still that is no reason to write them off just yet. They should make a run of it.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Kevin Love left this team because of frustration of not making the post season six seasons in a row. Of course that set Cleveland up for great things this season, but what about the young talent that Minnesota got in return?
Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Bennet should be set and ready to contribute this season. They can learn a lot from Thaddeus Young and Chase Budinger (provided the latter gets healthy).
Honestly, all signs point to the Timberwolves being able to rebuild their franchise very soon. If they can keep their hustle up for the entire game (a problem that they had last season) good things should happen for them in turn.
Orlando Magic
It really is difficult to tell what to make of this team. They have made some revisions that indicate that they are building for the future, while making some other acquisitions that point to short term patch work. Aaron Gordon and Elfrid Payton are both about as opposite on the spectrum as can be when compared to Channing Frye and Ben Gordon.
Still maybe there is a method to the madness. Those young players may have just earned the guidance necessary to compete in this stacked league. Time will tell if this pans out but at least the Magic is making strides to do things better this season
Charlotte Hornets
This is the team that surprised everyone last season by winning 43 games. Now that Lance Stephenson has come aboard along with new players Noah Vonleh and Cody Zeller, there is a lot of power in their game and they are just starting to get people talking.
Gerald Henderson and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist also add to the ability and versatility this group will showcase in the 2014-2015 season. This team has a lot of pure talent, something that they need if they want to be able to hang in a division that also hosts the Heat and Cavaliers.
