The birds that throw themselves to break structures are now hitting the big screen--minus the ouch and plus the story.
Sony Pictures and Rovio Entertainment have officially announced that the sensational "Angry Birds" are indeed up for their film, featuring the voices of top comedians and actors. Rovio has unveiled the list of cast after "Angry Birds" players flung over 1 billion birds in the last 48 hours.
Starring the movie is Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses), who will be leading as Red. Rovio describes him as "a bird with a temper problem"--an angry one indeed. Josh Gad (Frozen) will be playing "speedy" Chuck. Danny McBride (This is the End) will voice the "volatile" Bomb. Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) will be Matilda. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, X-Men: Days of Future Past) will play the "legendary" Mighty Eagle. Bill Hader (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) takes a role which was described as joining "the pork side."
Rovio has also dished the supporting cast, which remained as star-studded as the leads. Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Hannibal Buress (Broad City), Cristela Alonzo (ABC's Cristela), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street), Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black) and Latin music icon Romeo Santos are all part of the top-caliber flock.
YouTube sensations Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla (Smosh) will also be joining.
Rovio has also released a teaser image of the 3D CG-animated film. The photo features three characters: on the left is a banana-resembling bird with feathery head and tail, which could be Chuck; at the center is possibly Red, based on his color and eyebrows that hinted nothing else but hot temperament; the giant bird on the rightmost could be Bomb, whose round shape features what appears like a fuse at the top of his head.
Back in Sept. 2013, Rovio has already announced the people behind the upcoming movie. Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis were announced as directors, while John Cohen and Catherine Winder worked as producers. David Maisel is the executive producer. The film will play under the script of Jon Vitti.
Slated for release on July 1, 2016, Cohen expressed his feelings toward the high-profile cast, "I'm extremely proud of this cast. Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they're surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent... We're thrilled to have them all on board."
For the meantime, the "Angry Birds" game can be downloaded from various platforms here.
