After a long wait, fans of the late Princess of R&B, Aaliyah, have finally gotten a glimpse of their idol's upcoming biopic.
E! Online has first released the trailer for Lifetime's "Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B" TV movie. It features the 23-year-old lead star Alexandra Shipp in a dance sequence complete with back up dancers. She's seen singing her heart out on stage while she's being greeted by fans.
The full teaser starts with Rachael Crawford as Aaliyah's mom giving advice to a young Aaliyah who's becoming a rising star in the music industry.
A shorter trailer version of the biopic was earlier released but it only featured Alexandra while doing the late artist's iconic dance steps. She showed off her great figure as she was dressed in a gray crop top paired with low rise pants.
Lifetime TV Network posted the 15-second clip over their Facebook page with a caption that says, "Aaliyah Was One In A Million." It was in the same post that they mentioned the premiere date of the biopic which happens to be on November 15.
Back in July, Lifetime formally announced that Alexandra landed the highly coveted role. Talk show personality Wendy Williams made the much anticipated reveal as she serves as the executive producer of the biopic.
Alexandra was in fact a second choice since Zendaya Coleman was first cast for the role but she eventually backed out.
Zendaya received a lot of critical bashing from fans who were not happy when she was chosen for the lead role in Aaliyah's biopic. However, according to Hollywood Life, the 18-year-old singer dancer said there were far too many complications that emerged within the production making her decide that it probably just wasn't meant to be. She made it clear that she turned down the role not because of the haters.
The production team had also encountered issues, involving music rights of the late artist's songs. The producers also had a hard time getting the full permission of Aaliyah's family.
The biopic is based on the book titled "Aaliyah: More Than a Woman" written by Christopher Farley.
Aside from the "House of Anubis" star, other cast members include Izaak Smith and Chattrisse Dolabaille to portray the roles of Timbaland and Missy Elliott, respectively.
The late Aaliyah passed away in a plane crash in 2001. She was 22 and was once linked to another R&B singer R. Kelly. She was at the peak of her career when the time of her death came causing shock to her fans from all parts of the globe.
