How did Derek Jeter spend his first day of retirement? The New York Yankees legend decided to just do what normal people do: walk on the street beside his special someone, donning no more than the basic shirt and jeans.
The Daily Mail noticed that the 40-year-old shortstop did not have any problem adjusting to civilian life, as a day after his last game on Sunday, he was spotted buying coffee with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Sports Illustrated model Hannah Davis.
The couple of about a year reportedly walked from the coffee shop in West Village, New York City. Look at them in this tweet from ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell.
BTN.com noticed that Jeter wore a Michigan t-shirt, connecting it to his roots--he graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and received a scholarship in that state before entering Major League Baseball.
TMZ did not fail to notice that Davis sported a gold ring, which would put in question a recent Hollywood Life report.
"Derek is not getting engaged or married anytime soon," it quoted an insider as saying in a Sept. 27 report. "He is only thinking about processing that his career is over."
"He is looking forward to taking the next few months to be out of the spotlight and he is looking to ring in the new year by relaxing and maybe getting into businesses like Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan did after their careers ended," the unnamed source also told Hollywood Life.
Fans Share is on TMZ's side, citing words from the man himself.
"I was too selfish to be able to juggle a family and kids. But I look forward to it happening. I just know that I ... couldn't have done it while I was playing. I was ... too selfish, I guess," he reportedly told sports memorabilia dealer Brandon Steiner.
It's been a fruitful 20-year Hall of Famer career and Jeter has never tied the knot with any of his previous dates, who include Mariah Carey, Jessica Biel, Jordana Brewster and Minka Kelly. However, the Fans Share report quotes a source as saying, "They (Jeter and Davis) are really happy. She could be the one."
Davis was at the sidelines of Jeter's final game in Boston, Massachusetts, and then walked with her guy postgame, the Daily Mail said. So, Jeter may be saying goodbye to his whopping $12 million-a-year salary but he just might be saying hello to a more serious relationship.
The confusion did not seem to bother the couple as they casually strolled Monday morning, with a medium-sized hot brew in the retiree's hand while the model held a chilled beverage. So, after all, how did Jeter spend his first day of retirement? By making sure that he would still be interesting sans the baseball action.
