Over other potential manufacturers, Google allegedly chose HTC to create its upcoming Nexus 9 tablet.

In a report by The Wall Street Journal, HTC engineers were said to have been flying to the Googleplex in Mountain View to work on the project for some time already.

Why Google picked HTC over more experienced companies like Samsung is something that can only be speculated in the meantime. WSJ cited that the decision is a reflection of the company's tradition of broadening its partnership base, perhaps to prevent monopoly. The outlet cited an unnamed source saying that Google has been eyeing HTC since 2013.

Google said in a statement,"Android is a vibrant ecosystem, and many of the industry players are doing very well. There's room for many partners to do well and to innovate with Android."

Meanwhile, Android Central reported that the last two generations of the Nexus 7 tablets were made by Asus. It therefore makes sense that Google chooses a new tablet-maker for the present.

For HTC's part, TechCrunch cited the company to have failed in its Flyer, ceasing to produce tablets for a long period of time. The outlet added that HTC quit on its tablet production gist after experiencing difficulties acquiring "any significant traction." HTC was reported to be "watching [tablets] very, very closely" for now.

Could this be HTC's time to shine?

If the union for Nexus 9 is indeed true, then this will not be HTC's first collaboration with Google. Recall that HTC was responsible for Google's first Nexus smartphone: the Nexus One. The device came out in 2010.

To date, Google and HTC have not made any comment regarding their rumored collaboration for the said device. More importantly, do plans for a Nexus 9 actually exist in the first place?

There are enough evidences, according to The Verge. A patent lawsuit filed by Nvidia against Qualcomm and Samsung earlier this month was cited. The statement said "the HTC Nexus 9, expected in the third quarter of 2014, is also expected to use the Tegra K1." This translates to the authenticity that a certain Nexus 9 is indeed in the making.

As for Nexus 9's probable specs, the following could be present, according to Know Your Mobile.

  • The screen display is 8.9 inches, sporting a 2048x1440 resolution.
  • The device will operate with NVIDIA Logan 64-bit processor (Tegra K1).
  • Nexus 9's internal storage reportedly comes in 16GB and 32GB. It will house 2GB of RAM.
  • The rear camera captures 8MP OIS, while the front snaps 3MP.
  • The physical device is tailored from aluminum, with zero-gap construction.
  • Its dimensions are 8.91"x5.98"x0.31".
  • It weighs about 418g, or 427g with LTE. It may also have front-facing speakers.

What do you think of HTC making the next Nexus tablet?
