The 2012 hit maker of "good Kid, m.A.A.d. City" Kendrick Lamar is back with a brand new single "i." Expected to be released soon, the announcement was made through his tweet that featured the song's digital copy and what appeared to be the album cover.
No further caption spoke for the post, yet it got thousands of retweets.
The track begins with a public demonstration, where a man who seemed to be the speaker yelled, "And if you read between the lines, we'll learn how to love one another...But you can't do that... I said you can't do that, with no love in yourself"--until a tango-ish beat steps in.
"i" spinned lyrics that said "Everybody lack confidence, how many times my potential was anonymous? How many times the city makin' me promises, so I promise this... I love myself" and provides a fresh treat to the ears.
Although classified as explicit, the song has touched on themes of positivity and confidence. The chorus repeatedly belted out, "I love myself."
Time reported that Kendrick might have no problem with confidence, anyway. The outlet said his previous track, "Control," appeared to establish that he believes in himself.
The song finishes in an upbeat instrumental that sounds jazz and hip-hop altogether.
Aside from mix tape tracks, "i" will be Kendrick's first proper release, according to Independent. The rapper was said to have featured on multiple songs in 2013, earning $250,000 a verse.
After the release, he was reported by Complex to visit Power 106 studio for an interview with Big Boy and Rikki Martinez. There he explained the song's creative background, including the reasons for introducing a different sound.
When his previous work in "Good Kid" was mentioned, he responded, "If I keep focusing on, 'I need to make something better than good kid,' it's going to be just that."
He added that looking into the past is not challenging. He said, "I don't want to become that person reflecting on what has been done. What I'm doing now is the question. I'm only as good as my last word, my last hook, my last bridge."
Kendrick announced that there is no official release date of the album yet. He was reported to be "locked in the studio" to work non-stop. He admitted liking 7 songs in his new album and said there were about 30 songs he did not like that much--which counts 37 tracks in attempt. Will all be released?
Purchase "i" in iTunes for $0.69.
