One of the most awaited shows this fall is Fox's Batman "prequel" series, "Gotham" and the beautiful Victoria Cartagena has shared some insights on her gay detective character, Renee Montoya.
Speaking with AfterEllen, the Latina recalled the process she went through prior to getting the part of the butt-kicking, series regular, female character.
Going into auditions, the star explained she didn't know what role she was up for but only that it was a recurring role for the "Gotham" series.
"I didn't really know what I was auditioning for. I knew it was Batman's Gotham, so I was excited about that, but they gave us dummy sides because they were being pretty secretive. I thought I was reading for someone named 'Kit,' so I couldn't do any research on her."
She noted receiving word on her successful bid in May and since then, has described the experience as "an amazing ride; I am enjoying it, thoroughly."
Commenting on the "Gotham" version of Montoya, Cartagena says the character's life is pretty consistent with the comic book. "She is a detective in the Major Crimes Unit of the Gotham City Police Department and she is a lesbian character. She definitely has a history with James Gordon's fiance. It's not even a big deal that she's gay; she just is."
Cartagena also explained that the character being a lesbian is a non-issue in the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD).
"GCPD has a lot of problems, but that's not one of them. They're pretty accepting," said the star to AfterEllen.
"It's an honor, truly. It's a privilege. A lot of credit goes to DC for introducing this diversity into its comics, this ethnic diversity and this gender and sexual diversity, and for including it on the show, for not shying away from these social issues. My character was introduced in the '90s, so that was well ahead of the curve,' she added, acknowledging DC Comics effort.
Montoya is the character who had a romantic relationship with Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) the woman engaged to Jim Gordon, Cartagena told Fox News Latino in the past, "(In the show) you start to see who she is, her work life."
Cartagena spoke highly of the work they've done, explaining it will appeal to comic fans as well as everyone else.
"It has a little bit for everyone. Romance. Drama," quoted Fox News Latino. "Please watch. You won't be disappointed."
Other details the actress teased fans with? She revealed that so far, she's done eight episodes for the series and for more tidbits, she will definitely try to keep fans updated through tweets.
See Victoria along with Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor and more every Monday, 8pm EST on Fox. The series aired its premiere Sept. 22.
