The Minnesota Timberwolves is currently considering their options with point guard Ricky Rubio whose contract will soon expire. There are rumors circling that the player will definitely have a contract extension but news of his being dropped from the team can never be avoided.

In a Fox Sports report, it was noted that Rubio's contract extension is probably the most viable scenario in the coming days.

Timberwolves general manager, Milt Newton, said that he feels optimistic about Rubio's staying with the team.

"We just have to deal with his agent," he added.

Newton was referring to Dan Fergan, who according to Fox Sports, has been asking for a maximum salary for his player. The Wolves claimed that they are confident about the point guard's talent but said that they cannot afford paying him about $75 million for another five years.

Aside from this monetary concern, there are still a few reasons why Rubio's contract might not be extended by the Wolves and here are the three major ones:

1. Negotiations about the salary of Rubio and some other concerns of his camp seem to be getting blurry as both camps, according to Newton, fail to agree on some terms. "There are some things that we agree on, some things we don't agree on," he told Fox Sports.

2. Rubio is a bit hesitant to play for his team minus Kevin Love who was earlier traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Fox Sports said that "losing Love stung Rubio" though he cleared that he is not going anywhere for the time being.

3. A similar SB Nation report also explained that the "outside factor" are working against him, noting that it could be totally impossible for the Wolves to ink a contract extension that is close to five years. The report discussed that under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, only one designated player in the roster can extend a contract. Extending Rubio's contract to five years is reportedly a risky move for the team.

But despite these considerations, Newton said that they will continue talks with Rubio's camp.

"Going forward, you want to show good will and trust in a player. So it can kind of go both ways whether you wait or do something now, but it has to be right for both sides," he added.

Newton also noted that they will deal with the situation like what they did with Love.

"We're going to do the best thing for the organization, and if we can get something done sooner, great. If not, we're not necessarily in a rush," he said.

Fox Sports said that in case the two camps cannot agree before October 31, the point guard will have to play out this coming season and seek for free agency next summer, which will give the Wolves the chance to sign him again.

"If we can get something worked out, fine. If not . . . he's under contract," Newton added.
