If there is one thing that Samsung fans love to say it is that when it comes to smartphone technology, Samsung did it first. If there is one thing that Apple fans love to say in turn, it is that when it comes to smartphones, Apple did it better.
Reviews are starting to come in for the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5. As expected neither phone is really getting dismissed in favor of the competition so this really all comes down to personal preference on operating system, aesthetics and all of the other bells and whistles that consumers have come to expect from devices such as this.
Samsung Galaxy S5
The mantra appears to be don't try to fix what isn't broken for the fifth iteration of Samsung's most popular phone. Everything that users are familiar with is here. The bright, beautiful AMOLED display, the quad-core processor, and the 16-megapixel camera. Not only that, but it all runs better than ever thanks to Android KitKat and Samsung's streamlined custom interface.
The thing that some reviewers like Mashable are pointing out however, is that this largely feels like an evolutionary advancement than a revolutionary one. There really is nothing to entice new users to try out the phone and what little new features they have are nothing to write home about. The heart rate monitor is not going to see wide mainstream use and the fingerprint scanner is confusing to get a handle on.
Still if you are a Samsung fan that has stuck with the company's phones every step of the way so far, there really is no reason to stop now. As CNET points out, the phone is, "Subtly improved and smartly refined," and for most fans that will be enough to convince them to pick it up.
iPhone 6
Putting aside its first foray into the phablet space with the iPhone 6 plus, the standard 4.7 inch iPhone 6 is definitely a positive for Apple. IGN noted the benefits from their hands-on impression. The crisp Retina HD display really makes the best of iOS 8 and the increased real estate of the device; couple that with the boost in LTE and Wi-Fi speeds, and there are a lot of changes that Apple users have been asking for.
Per CNET's review, the camera is something of a disappointment; not because of the megapixel count, but because it lacks the optical image stabilization feature that graces the 6 Plus.
The review on Forbes also bemoans the lack of sapphire crystal for the front of the display, the glass that many hoped would be fitted for the new phones for added durability and toughness. Still, the same review also notes the better form factor of the device along with the fact Apple Pay will likely be enough to get many on-board when it launches.
Apple and Samsung are getting to be distinguished by their operating system and physical look more and more. Now that each phone has a large display, there's even less to separate them than before, especially with their prices starting at $199. As they stand, both the new Galaxy and iPhone should provide more than enough of an upgrade for tech heads to enjoy. At least until rumors start to spread for the next products.
