It's been almost a year since Google released the Nexus 5, its Android-powered flagship phone made by LG, and it's been over a year since a new Nexus tablet was released (ASUS' Nexus 7). The point is, it's about time for some updated hardware, and the rumors point to Google releasing a new phone and tablet sometime next month.

Nexus X (Nexus 6)

Google's next Android handset is expected to be released before the end of October, much like the Nexus 5, which launched on Oct. 31 of last year. The new device is rumored to be built by Motorola, a Nexus device first. Given that past Nexus phones have been based on its manufacturer's flagship device (last year's Nexus 5 is reported to have been based on the LG G2), this year's Nexus should take its design cues from the recently announced Moto X (2014), and that's a good thing.

As far as specs, a benchmark result surfaced online recently that showed the specs of a device that it claims was called "Google shamu." Shamu is thought to be the codename for the next Nexus phone, and if the benchmark results are for real, the Nexus X is going to be quite a phone. Android L along with a Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera, and a 2560 x 1440 pixel 5.2-inch display are all on board according to the leaked benchmark results.

Look for the Nexus X to drop sometime in October.

Nexus 9

This rumored tablet has also been called Nexus 8 even though the screen is reportedly much closer to nine inches (8.9" to be exact) than it is to eight inches. According to the latest rumors, the Nexus 9 will be made by HTC, the makers of the original Nexus One handset. The tablet will reportedly launch on or around Oct. 16 and will run the next version of Google's Android software, Android 5.0 or Android L.

HTC scheduled a press event for Oct. 8, though experts suggest the event will showcase a camera and perhaps two new phones.

The Nexus 9 looks to be a premium device if the specs reports are true. The tablet is said to sport a 2560 x 1600 8.9-inch display and the latest version of Android. Also reportedly included on board is a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor that supports 64-bit architecture. Three gigs of RAM, options for 16 or 32 GB of storage and an expansion slot for micro SD cards are also rumored to be included.
