French defender Raphael Varane has signed on with Real Madrid for another 6-years by opting to extend his stay with the Spanish club until 2020. The news was confirmed in a statement posted on Real Madrid's website.
"Real Madrid C. F. has extended Raphaël Varane's contract with the club until 30 June 2020." read the statement.
The 21-year-old centre back was rumored to be leaving the club for Chelsea following a notable performance during the World Cup. Bleacher Report noted how Jose Mourinho, former Los Blancos boss, took an interest in the young player.
The rising star is a stellar lock-in for the European champions as he continues to wow as a "well-rounded defender who offers decent pace, dominance in the air and power to shield opponents away from possession," noted the Bleacher Report. Additionally, his time with Madrid has exposed him to their level of play, allowing him to be a much more effective player.
Mail Online recalled that moving from Lens to Real, Varane is the club's third-choice centre back behind Spain's Sergio Ramos and Pepe of Portugal.
In a report by Fox News Latino, during Varane's first season under Mourinho, he played in 15 games and scored two goals. The following season, he managed to double his playing time and walked away with two goals to his name. Despite injuries last season, he was able to play in 23 games.
"Varane is likely to be a rotational player for the next season at least, an issue which loses its prominence now his new contract has been agreed," assessed the Bleacher Report. "There's the possibility a mega buyout clause has been inserted into his latest deal, but any figure would likely keep Mourinho at arm's length during this era of UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules," continued the sports website.
Varane has built quite a good career record in his three years with Real Madrid. Inside Spanish Football noted his distinctions include "an impressive haul of honours, with winners medals for the La Liga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup."
