The Arizona Cardinals deactivated its running back Jonathan Dwyer for its Sept. 21 match after being arrested for domestic violence charges on Tuesday.

Initial reports of the incident revealed that Dwyer is being accused of assaulting his 27-year-old wife Kayla and his 18-month-old son and also of restricting a person to report the incident to the police.

A report by Hollywood Life said that the domestic violence acts happened inside the athlete's residence in southeast Phoenix last July. It added that Jonathan has already been taken and booked into the Maricopa County Jail for the following charges: one count of aggravated assault causing a fracture, one count of aggravated assault involving a minor, two counts of criminal damage and one count of preventing to report an emergency.

In a similar report, TMZ said that the suspect "acknowledged the incidents" but denied carrying out the assaults. The Cardinals immediately deactivated the player for their upcoming fight after learning of his arrest.

It said in a statement quoted by Yahoo Sports that they are fully cooperating upon notification by the police of the incident.

"Given the serious nature of the allegations we have taken the immediate step to deactivate Jonathan from all team activities. We will continue to closely monitor this as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available," the statement read.

For his part, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has also announced that the NFL will be "judged on its actions going forward." Under the new rules released last month, a six-game suspension will be given to first offenders while a lifetime ban comes with the second offense.

This has been somehow in response to the Ray Rice incident which brewed for the past week after an elevator footage showed how the NFL player punched his wife Janay unconscious to the floor. The incident led to public outrage with Rice only given a suspension. A lot of people even called for the resignation of Goodell.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Adrian Peterson was also placed on indefinite leave by the Minnesota Vikings--barring him from all team activities although he will still be paid. Peterson got recently indicted for punishing his 4-year-old son using a tree branch.

He has already apologized and explained that he is not a child abuser. "I have to live with the fact that when I disciplined my son the way I was disciplined as a child, I caused an injury that I never intended or thought would happen," he earlier told The Guardian.

With these type of sanctions, the public is hoping that players who get involved in similar cases will not just be able to instantly escape like they did nothing wrong.
