What a way to send a champion Olympian out of her comfort zone-and then out of her confident self.
American track and field athlete Lolo Jones said she was emotionally devastated after getting booted out of "Dancing with the Stars" on Tuesday evening, writing in a letter that she's "sick of being a loser," TMZ Sports reported.
Hollywood Reporter noted that the two-time gold medal world champion was not able to stay in the competition due to a poor cha-cha performance with her partner Keo Motsepe, a professional dancer.
She received a low score of 22/40 for her performance and also some unsolicited comments from other people.
"I just felt everything swirling inside and for me, obviously, I have two past Olympics, or three now, where I've come so close to a medal. Every time those things happen, people tease. They're like, 'You're such a failure in the spotlight. And so literally, when that dance happened, I had that moment. I was like, here it goes again. Now everybody is going to say I have a bad attitude," she told Hollywood Reporter.
She explained that losing was already difficult for her but receiving derogatory remarks from other people also made her very sad and emotional. This was apparent on her social media posts after the contest which more or less summed up how bad she really felt.
On her Facebook page, Jones immediately shared how she felt about leaving the show. "When I was dancing last night and messed up I had flashbacks of the three Olympics and that people constantly tease me about. I thought oh no here it comes again. People are going to ridicule me. I'm so tired of feeling embarrassed."
She added that when she joined her other competitors onstage, her stomach whirled while she fought back tears because she felt "broken, unlovable and embarrassed.
It can be felt from her post that she was taking the loss really hard as she said that her stay with the show was like a "lasting lesson."
"I really wanted to stay on the show and have the layers of hurt wash away by showing the public how hard I work. I wanted to come away a victor for once. I wanted to do so good performing in public that the haters would stop teasing me," she continued on with her post.
But she recognized that if this is God's plan for her, she will readily accept it and trust in what He has in store for her.
"Thank you everyone who wrote me kind messages. You were helping me not fall into darkness," she concluded.
As for her partner Motsepe, Jones told Hollywood Reported that it was also "disappointing" for someone new in the show to go home during the early part of the show.
"I would hope to see him back on a future season ... because people need to learn who he is, see what his style of choreography is," she added.
