Microsoft is coming off a day where they acquired a new game developer in a multi-billion dollar deal, but that did not stop the company from making more, albeit smaller and less significant, announcements today.
Microsoft has revealed a number of new accessories that it believes will improve the lives of consumers. The best part: they will work with Apple's iOS and Google's Android, in addition to Microsoft's products and will be available by the end of September.
Microsoft's Universal Mobile Keyboard is drawing the most attention, and justifiably so. The keyboard is design to work with multiple operating systems and devices and can be paired up with up to three devices through bluetooth, and has the ability to switch between them on the fly.
Granted this is not anything radically new in the keyboard market, but what is getting a lot of notice is the smart design of the product. The protective cover for the keyboard also acts as the device's stand, allowing for it to be positioned comfortably away from the screen. The price of $79.95 even makes it a viable alternative to the Type Cover for the Surface Pro 3.
Also revealed was the Arc Touch Bluetooth Mouse which will sell for the price of $69.95. The mouse also has low-energy Bluetooth 4.0. For those more budget conscious, the 3500 mouse is getting a new paint design and will be available for $29.95, which should help make the device an option for any back-to-school crowds.
Microsoft also revealed some new gear for gamers. For PC gamers, Microsoft is now providing an Xbox One controller that will be bundled with a special micro USB cable that will allow the controller to be used with PC games. Previously, consumers had to buy the controller and the cable separately if they wanted to play using the Xbox One controller on the PC. Interestingly, the price will be $59.95, the same as the current price for an unbundled controller.
Unfortunately the device will still not offer wireless play with the PC. This is not the first time that Microsoft has offered this sort of skew; last generation's Xbox 360 began with a wired-only configuration before Microsoft decided to release a dongle that allowed it to be used wirelessly with Windows machines. Perhaps a similar set up will eventually surface for the Xbox One as well.
Still these devices should be more than enough to tide technology fans over until the next big announcement from the technology giant. The new Microsoft devices hit store shelves in late September.
