Credit Apple products for setting records before they even hit stores. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus officially were available for preorder on Friday. Apple is reporting record reservation numbers for both of their new phones; though, the company did not provide exact numbers on how many devices that had been sold thus far.
After a few hours, it was confirmed that those that purchased the larger 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus would have to wait as long as four weeks for all memory configurations and across all major cellular network providers including Verizon, AT&T, Spring and T-Mobile.
The 4.7 inch standard iPhone 6 remained somewhat more available for delivery next Friday, but some providers were beginning to report shortcomings in their stock of the lower-priced units.
According to reports from NBC, the major carriers that were still able to guarantee on-time delivery had limited supplies of the smartphone. The most popular models appear to be the 16 GB phones in gold and silver and the 128 GB model in gray. The least popular were the 128 GB model in gold and the 16 GB in gray.
Apple and most carriers began taking their pre-orders in the early hours of Friday morning, resulting in an immediate influx of website issues as users bombarded the site at once to reserve a phone.
Apple phones are always popular upon their initial launch, but according to Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller, who spoke to Reuters on Friday, these figures surpass anything seen in the last five years.
"Response to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus has been incredible, with a record number of pre-orders overnight. Pre-orders are currently available online or through the Apple store," Muller said.
iPhone 5S and 5C sole 9 million units combined through their first weekend of availability. Prior to that the iPhone 5 only sold 5 million within its first three days, which was still more than the 4 million that the iPhone 4S sold.
Apple is frequently able to whip its fan base into a frenzy over every new product it unveils largely because of its strong marketing tactics. This carries over to the real world as well as the digital one, with reports coming in of fans lining up outside of Apple stores before the phone was even revealed.
The Apple iPhone 6 is set to be released Sept. 19 to those fortunate enough to get their hands on them. The iPhone 6 will start at $199 and the iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299 on-contract.
