Formula One racer Michael Schumacher has been discharged from the hospital and is expected to continue with his recovery at home.

Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, said on Tuesday that the racer is still on a long road to his recovery after he sustained a serious head injury while skiing in France in December last year that left him in coma for a few months, USA Today reported.

"Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months. There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead," Kehm said in a statement.

It can be remembered that last June, the racer was taken in a hospital in Lausanne after spending six months in a medical facility in France. USA Today said that Schumacher has already been moved into his home in Gland, which is near Geneva.

"We ask that the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that speculations about his state of health are avoided," Kehm added.

A similar New York Times article said that the 45-year-old former F1 champ is already relaxing and spending time with his family in a property that is about 25 miles away on Lake Geneva.

It was earlier reported that Schumacher's wife, Corinna, planned to build a clinic at the family estate in Gland so that he racer can continue his recovery at home.

Schumacher's family, in a statement reported by the New York Times in an article, thanked the hospital staff in Lausanne and again asked that the privacy of the family continue to be respected.

"We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work," the statement read.

Friends and family of the racer continuously hope that he fully recovers from the accident, though doctors earlier claimed that it would still be difficult to predict as Schumacher underwent a series of head surgeries after the accident.

The past months have been both challenging and encouraging for the F1 racer, who according to the New York Times, have made positive signs of recovery and responses for the span of his recovery period.

In an interview with Mirror last month, Schumacher's wife said that the racer's condition is slowly getting better and improving.
