According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft--the parent company/owner of the Xbox and Windows brands--is apparently "in serious discussions" to purchase video game developer Mojang. Mojang is the driving force behind the immensely popular Minecraft games.

WSJ cites "a person with knowledge of the matter," in their story and says that Microsoft's purchase of Mojang could exceed $2 billion if it goes through. Microsoft and Mojang both declined to comment to Wall Street Journal regarding this alleged deal.

Markus Persson founded Mojan in 2009. The company has two yet-to-be-released games in development: Cobalt and Scrolls. Mojan also recently release Minecraft on the PS4 and Xbox One. These games are all in addition to the numerous updates that the company is currently iterating on for Minecraft.

These are important to note because if Microsoft is indeed planning to buy Mojang, it would gain control over not only all of the studios' upcoming games, but also over the incredibly valuable Minecraft series. As of June, the game has sold approximately 54 million copies, and has actually done the best on consoles. This provides plenty of incentive for the company to make sure that this deal goes through.

Minecraft launched in late 2011 on PC to rave reviews before going to Xbox 360, Android and iOS in 2012.
