Is Eli Manning Washed Up? Giants QB Looks Atrocious in Debut

After an utter dismantling of the New York Giants by the Lions on Monday night, fans and fantasy football players alike are out for blood when it comes to quarterback Eli Manning. If for some reason you were naïve enough to start Manning in your opening weekend of league play, we feel incredibly sorry for you. Manning is now on pace to throw for 32 interceptions this season, which has always been a common area of concern for the two-time Super Bowl champ.

The Giants are notoriously slow starters, but after Monday's performance, it's hard to see any bright spots in their immediate future. Manning finished with 163 yards passing, two interceptions and one touchdown pass. To see that kind of stat line behind a two-time champion is truly a disheartening sign. Although the Detroit Lions should be given some credit, their secondary is not known as being a powerhouse.

After the game Manning looked visibly disheveled as he pondered quickly searching for some notion of how the game had got away so fast. "We have skill players," Manning maintained. "I've got to do a better job getting Victor the ball, getting him more involved and finding completions and catches for him, because he's a playmaker. Overall, I could probably do a better job getting my receivers some catches."

In Manning's defense, he does have a brand new offensive coordinator who has been implementing more of a 'West Coast' style of play. This new technique was supposed to make Manning a more efficient passer, but seeing as how he only completed 50 percent of his passes, it's obviously not working yet.

As much as fans want to blame a single player for a terrible loss, the truth is that Manning is not alone on the playing field. Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford shredded the Giants' defense, and on the offensive side of the ball, Manning faced pressure all night.

While Manning may have some more left in his tank, he has never shown the same abilities that his older brother Peyton has. Eli has one more Super Bowl win then Peyton does, but as of late, it looks like the brother comparison isn't even worth thinking about.

With time the Giants should be able to figure out some answers, but they must act quickly or risk being left out in the cold in a competitive NFC division.
