Tiger Woods' dreams of repeating as PGA Memorial Tournament champion are fading fast while Matt Kuchar finds himself in the driver's seat in the final round of the tournament on Sunday.

Woods played the worst nine holes of his career on the PGA Tour Saturday, shooting for two double bogeys and a triple bogey on the back nine for a total of 44, marking his highest nine-hole total since turning pro. When it was all said and done, Woods found himself 16 shots out of the lead with a 79.

Kuchar, who won the Players Championship last year, had a much more fortuitous day on the greens of Muirfield, battling through swirling winds for a 2-under-par 70, putting him atop the leaderboard heading into Sunday, a full two shots over Kevin Chappell and Kyle Stanley.

The No.9-ranked golfer in the world, Kuchar told reporters after the round concluded that he was just happy to get through the tough conditions on the greens.

''It was a bit of survival,'' Kuchar said, as reported by The Boston Globe. ''I was fortunate to make a handful of birdies. I think any time you make a birdie in these conditions, you feel like you're really up on the field here. Most of these holes, you're looking at just getting out with a par.''

Bill Haas, who led entering Saturday, fell three shots behind due to three straight bogeys late in the day for a mark of 76. Rory McIlroy, the No.2 golfer in the world, rebounded from a rough start at Muirfield to end up with a 75 to make the cut on Saturday.

Chappell had a big day, shooting a 4-under-68 to put him within close distance of Kuchar for the lead while Stanley shot for a 70.

Heading into Sunday, Kuchar has the opportunity to land a big victory before the U.S. Open later this month.

"If you're not hitting the ball solid, you don't have a chance," Kuchar said.
