American director Michael Bay and his crew were attacked by rogue street vendors on Thursday while filming Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, the latest installment from the Hollywood movie franchise. Two assailants, surnamed Mak, were arrested by Hong Kong police authorities, according to a Daily Mail report. It was the film's first day of shooting.
Bay blogged about the incident and said a "drugged-up zombie" came up to them while filming a scene on early Thursday morning at Quarry Bay. Bay said that the assailants were Hong Kong vendors who were trying to extort a ridiculous amount of money (HK $100,000) from the crew.
"'Every vendor where we shot got paid a fair price for our inconvenience, but he wanted four times that amount. I personally told this man and his friends to forget it we were not going to let him extort us," Bay said.
The man obviously didn't appreciate Bay's response. Bay said that the two men left and one returned with an air conditioning unit, throwing it in his way. Bay was able to evade the potentially harmful and fatal blow. According to a statement released by Paramount Pictures, Bay was able to grab the air unit and push his attacker away.
Bay maintained that, contrary to media reports, he and his team were not injured from the incident. "The story being passed around is not all true," the award-winning director said on his official website MichaelBay.com.
But according to a Reuters report, a police spokeswoman told local and international media which rushed to the scene that Bay sustained minor facial injuries. Bay's injuries were not at all serious and didn't require medical attention. Bay pushed through with the filming immediately after the incident.
Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, which is topbilled by Mark Wahlberg, is slated for worldwide release on June 2014, according to BBC.
The BBC also cites Hong Kong's famed Victoria Harbour as one of the film's rumored locations.
Michael Bay was also known for directing blockbusters Armageddon (1999) and Pearl Harbor (2001).
