Not to be left out as Samsung and Apple begin to unveil their newest smartphone offerings for the end of the year, Motorola has announced the newest version of its Moto X, the Moto G, the Moto 360 smartwatch, and the Bluetooth Moto Hint earpiece. The new phones will be launching later this month in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia for $100 on contract. The Moto 360 will be available for $249 today in the US and will launch in the UK in October.
MOTO 360
Smartwatches have yet to deliver on the promises that providers have been touting for years. The 360 however has garnered a fair amount excitement and may be the first one to shatter the glass ceiling and break into the regular market. What's most striking is the slim circular display for the face of the watch. It measures at 1.5 inches and at 320x 290 native resolution, rivaling the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear 2.
Internal hardware for the Moto 360 clocks in at 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. While it seems that its internals will cause it to drag behind its contemporaries, Motorola boasts that the battery will last an entire day, which is a big plus.
MOTO X
Nearly every aspect of the Moto X has been overhauled for the phone. The phone now includes a 5.2-inch 1080p display, an improvement from the 4.7-inch 720p screen found with last years model. The Moto X will also sport a new 2.5GHz quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip with 2GB of RAM for improved internal power with 16 or 32GB of internal storage. The rear-facing camera has been upgraded from a 10-megapixel shooter to a 13-megapixel on the new Moto X.
Physically, not much has changed between the current model and its predecessor, with the same clean and rounded casing allowing for an ergonomic design that fits comfortably in the hand. The biggest difference in the frame is that it is now metal instead of plastic, something that is rapidly becoming the standard in today's smart devices.
One thing that won't be changing from the older models of the Moto X is the ability to customize the casing to your liking. In addition to the familiar colors, finishes, plastic and wood, the Moto X will now of genuine leather as an option.
Motorola is notorious for making incremental changes to the Android operating system, which will continue with the Moto X. The only changes coming to Android version 4.4 KitKat include customizing what phrase initiates voice control and an updated version of its intuitive Active Display technology which will now be called Moto Display.
MOTO G
Motorola also updated its most successful smartphone, the Moto G. The screen is now half an inch larger, bringing the display up to five inches. The device is only slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor despite this change.
The fact that there will be no 4G on Moto G is a problem, but Motorola has never targeted an audience that demands unlimited 4G from their phones so this likely will not be a problem for its consumers.
MOTO HINT
The Hint is something much more unexpected than the other announcements from today. It is a tiny earpiece that actually sits inside the ear instead of clipping onto it. The Hint is voice activated with Google Voice search allowing for the standard features of answering questions and receiving turn-by-turn directions, all without checking your phone. The device has a ten hour battery life and will retail for $149. A release date has not been announced.
These announcements leave a lot of answers to be determined, but with the release dates of several of them already upon us, the answers to how good these devices are should be upon us soon.
