Legendary comedian, Joan Rivers, passed away in a New York Hospital at the age of 81 on Thursday afternoon. It was only last week when Rivers was taken to Mount Sinai hospital in Manhattan after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing a medical procedure.

"She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends," shared her daughter, Melissa Rivers in a statement, reported Variety."My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

The comedian, host and actress was best known for having a sharp tongue. No matter what she was doing, who she's talking to or which event she's at, she had made the world laugh with her scathing commentaries.

Joan got her big break when she became a guest host at "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson." She quickly rose to fame when she was bold enough to say and talk about things the public wouldn't expect.

Speaking to ET in 1981, "I talk about things nobody ever talked about before," she explained. "I just say it the way I think we're thinking about it and it's wonderful."

This was something host Larry King ackowledged as the truth. "She knew no boundaries," said King quoted CNN. "Everything was funny to her. You couldn't really object because she took no prisoners."

After being with Carson since 1965, she moved on to have a talk-show host career, eventually launching a rival program which reportedly led to her falll out with Carson, her mentor, noted The Wall Street Journal.

Her career hit another upward trajectory in the 1990s as a host on E! Network's "Fashion Police," where the outspoken TV personality would harshly criticize red carpet fashion and unapologetically comment on the tragic outfits of hollywood celebrtities.

Speaking on the loss of the television icon, her long-time friend, Nancy Reagan, said: "Joan Rivers was not only a dear friend, but one of the kindest and funniest people I ever knew. I doubt there's anyone who hasn't laughed at her or with her until they cried. Today our tears are those of sadness. I know I join millions in saying, 'Thanks for the good times Joan, we will truly miss you.' My love and deepest sympathy go to Melissa and Cooper," noted E! Online.

Rivers and her only child, Melissa, appeared together on the hit reality show "Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best?"
