Many top 10 teams last week found themselves in uneven match ups as everyone from Alabama to Oregon were challenged by lower-ranked contenders. While there was not much in the way of upsets, some like Oklahoma made a definitive statement in a dominant victory while others like UCLA made their fans sweat before eeking out a win and keeping their championship hopes alive.
This week promises to be much more competitive on multiple fronts. There are a lot of match ups within the top ten with many teams now having the opportunity to cause some upsets and throw the AP Top 25 poll into disarray early on in the season.
This Week's Top Matchups
#14 USC vs. #13 STANFORD
Of course one of the biggest stories going into this weekend is the PAC-12 match up between Stanford and USC at 12:30 PDT on ABC. The game will also be live streamed on ESPN 3. USC did not allow a long series of bad press to deter them from a strong opener against Fresno State. Led by new head coach Steve Sakisian, the Trojans ran an astounding 104 plays with wide receiver Nelson Agholor contributing 57 yards and two touchdowns in last week's game. USC is obviously a young team, but freshmen like Juju Jackson did not fail to contribute last week. USC is still in a state of rebuilding itself, but there is no better way to do that than to defeat Stanford on their home turf.
#3 OREGON vs. #7 MICHIGAN STATE
Number three Oregon welcomes number seven Michigan State in a premier game on FOX at 3:30 p.m. PDT. Oregon looked strong in their season opener against South Dakota, but the Ducks have to be careful, despite going into this game as the two touchdown favorites. The Spartans should not be overlooked. With top notch defensive-end Shalique Calhoun who topped off last season with 37 tackles, they can make things difficult for the Ducks on offense. If young quarterback Connor Cook can continue to capitalize on his strong start, Michigan State may have the opportunity to put up points and come up victorious in the hostile environments of the day and win big.
#8 OHIO STATE vs. VIRGINIA TECH
Don't let the fact that Virginia Tech is unranked lead you to discounting them in their game at Ohio State University on ESPN at 5 p.m. PDT. The game will also be live streamed on Watch ESPN. The Hokies have one of the best defenses in the country led by sophomore cornerback Kendall Fuller. Fuller put up some impressive numbers last season with 58 tackles and six interceptions. Look for the Hokies to come out strong in their effort to gain a ranking in this young season.
#16 NOTRE DAME vs. MICHIGAN
The final potential upset game is Notre Dame versus Michigan on NBC at 4:30 p.m. PDT. This is the last time that will see this historic rivalry play out for some time, but look for both teams to pull out all the stops to ensure that they go out on a high note. Quarterback Everett Golson looked impressive in his return against Rice last week with 295 passing yards, Two touch downs and 14 out of 22 passing completions. The Wolverines will not go down quietly, however. Devin Funchess and company turned up their offensive efforts against Appalachia State and are hoping to get that elusive ranking in their second game of the season.
This year can still go in any one of a dozen different directions, but if there is anything to be learned from previous college football seasons, it's that the most unlikely victories are often the most possible.
