After a disappointing pre-season, the San Francisco 49ers have just been dealt a crucial blow with the NFL announcing that it will suspend defensive end Aldon Smith for the first nine games of the season. Smith is one of the premiere pass rushers in the league and has mounted 42 sacks in 43 career games. While the 'Niners have been preparing for the inevitable news, there is no good way to replace a player of Smith's caliber.

With Aldon Smith out for nine games, and linebacker Navarro Bowman out for at least seven, the 49ers' chances to be serious contenders are hanging in the balance. In arguably one of the toughest divisions in the league, the Seahawks, Cardinals and Rams all have to be licking their chops at the sight of a tattered 49ers' defense.  

Aldon Smith received a four-game suspension for a substance violation and five-games for a player conduct violation, which came in the form of being arrested at LAX. Through his legal struggles and personal woes, the 49ers' have remained confident in Smith, and have done their best to try to help him turn his life around.

In a statement released by the 49ers, general manager Trent Baalke said, "Aldon has taken responsibility for his actions and has continued to show growth personally and professionally. We will continue to support him, but it is time to put this matter behind us and focus on the season ahead."

While the team's management may be able to quickly put the matter to bed, fans of the 49ers' cannot be pleased with Smith's recent behavior. Athletes have to remember that their off-the-field issues can come back to affect the team and the fans.

NFL fans have taken to Twitter to voice both praise and critique of the leagues decision.

With conflicting opinions on every issue it's difficult to decipher what a fair 'suspension' amounts too. In comparison to Ray Rice getting two games for domestic violence, are Aldon Smith's transgressions that much more egregious? Smith did enter into a rehab program last season in an attempt to receive treatment for his off-the-field issues.
