The South Korean tech giant has announced another smartwatch to add to its line of wearable devices. Samsung also introduced the Gear Circle which functions much like an earphone.

The Samsung Gear Solo, also known as the Gear S, boasts of a curved display and its ability to function as a standalone wearable device.

According to Samsung, the curved Super AMOLED display on the Gear S is not only "chic," but along with its "flexible band," it also "fits comfortably around the contours of the wrist." The screen measures 2 inches and has 360 by 480 resolution.

Like other Samsung Gear smartwatches, the Gear Solo is powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM. It has 4GB of storage and a 300 mAh battery which with normal use will last about 2 days.

Also like previous Samsung smartwatches, the new addition is IP67-certified - making it water and dust resistant, Sam Mobile noted.

The company said that the new wearable device "expands the smartphone experience to the wrist." With 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity under the hood, the Samsung Gear S allows users to receive notifications even without their smartphones.

"Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation," said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics in the press release statement.

"The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime," he added.

Aside from WiFi and 3G connectivity, Samsung's new smartphone also supports Bluetooth - enabling users to have more connectivity options. Samsung added that although the Gear Solo can function alone, users can still pair the wearable device with their smartphones.

As for features, Samsung has packed a myriad of Samsung Gear Apps onto the 2-inch curved smartwatch. It said in the press release that users will be able to enjoy content from "fastFT" of The Financial Times. The app is "a 24-hour news and views service."

Navigation features of the smartwatch will be brought to users by Nokia's HERE and it will have built-in GPS in connection with S Health and Nike+ Running - making it a good fitness and health companion, said Samsung. In fact, it also has built in sensors such as an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a compass, a heart rate monitor, a barometer and sensors for ambient light and UV.

The company said that the wearable device will be available via Samsung's retail channels, e-commerce websites and via carriers beginning October in black and white.
