LG just announced it's second smart watch, the G Watch R, which is expected to be available very soon, and the reason this news matters is because this new watch will be circular--a la the Moto 360. The odd thing is that LG's second smart watch could be available before Motorola's first, and that could be quite a blow to Motorola and it's highly-anticipated wearable, the Moto 360. Motorola promised that it's first smart watch would be available 'later this summer,' and as summer is essentially over and still no Moto 360, many are wondering if Motorola missed its chance to place a stranglehold on the smart phone market, even if only for a little while.
LG will debut the G Watch R smart watch at next week's IFA consumer electronics show, which will be held in Germany. Aside from the fact that the G Watch is circular, it also has a complete display--the Moto 360's display, by contrast, has a small section near it's bottom that appears black due to the placement of the display drivers. The G Watch will also turn a lot of heads because it's the first smart watch that actually looks like a normal time piece, even more so than the Moto 360.
The G Watch R will run Android Wear, Google's wearable OS, and will sport a 1.3-inch display at a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels. The display on the G Watch R will also use OLED technology instead of the LCD display tech used on its predecessor, the LG G Watch. LG claims that the new OLED tech will make the G Watch R easier to read in sunlight.
No details have been announced on a release date or price, but reports indicate the G Watch R will include a heart-rate monitor, unlike it's predecessor. Look for the G Watch R to launch soon in order to avoid getting lost in the crowd of smart phones launching this fall. The Moto 360 will be unveiled on September 4th and the Apple iWatch is expected to be announced on September 9th. So, if nothing else, consumers will have a decent amount of options to choose from when it comes to smart watches this fall.
