With the increasing number of men wanting to sport a cut like that of soccer player David Beckham and One Direction singer Harry Styles, hair salons claim that there is a projected 200 percent increase in male hair extensions.

According to a report by Complex, the Paul Edmonds salon in London had more and more male customers asking for "micro bond extensions" to add volume to their hair. This was also supported by hair extensions company, Great Lengths, who claimed that about 10 percent of their $6.6 million sales are to male customers.

The salon, according to Daily Mail, has been catering to clients who would want to have a hair like Beckham and Styles.

The thick hairstyle is becoming a trend especially now that famous celebrities and notable personalities are sporting it. It was also noted that men with receding hair lines and thinning hair also opt to buy hair extensions which has a life span of about five weeks.

Complex said that another salon, Jo Hansford, has revealed that their hair extensions service is not yet a hit with men but noted that there is already an increase in the inquiry of male customers about "thickening treatments and shampoos."

"Hair extensions are popular to use as a temporary fix for TV and films, and although we haven't really noticed this carry through to our salon clients, we have seen an increase in male clients enquiring about hair thickening treatments and shampoos," Jon Hansford salon senior stylist Joel Silverman said in the Daily Mail article.

Complex took note that this increase in demand in hair extension may be caused by the painful alternatives of lengthening one's hair like plugs and transplants. It added that these complicated procedures could cost a ton of money and could also be a painful and long process for men wanting to improve their look with hair improvement.

Fashion Beans explained that the new hair trend is called the pompadour which was actually named after Madame de Pompadour, the mistress of King Louis XV. The said style was sported by women during the 18th century and was used until the World War I. The pompadour is styled by combing the hair upwards with the sides of the head free from hair, sometimes shaved.

In the 1950s, Elvis sported this pompadour hair style as part of his rock'n'roll image. It became a hit recently when pop icon Justin Timberlake sported the hair in a photo for T Magazine. Fashion Beans said Timberlake's look became an instant hit.

It was later on adopted by the whole world with many giving their own twists to the hair style.
