Shakira's hit song, "Loca," was found to have broken copyright laws. Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled that the track was copied from another song titled, "Loca con su Tiguere," a tune written in 1998 by Dominican songwriter Ramon Arias Vasquez, shared Yahoo!
Sony distrubuted Shakira's song in both languages but the lawsuit focused on the Spanish version. The English version of "Loca" featuring Dizzee Rascal was "not offered into evidence" at the trial. The Spanish language version, which is in collaboration with Dominican rapper El Cata or Eduard Bello Pou was highly successful and sold more than five million copies and topped the Latin music charts, per BBC.
The news site quoted the judge concluding: "There is no dispute that Shakira's version of the song was based on Bello's version."
"Accordingly, I find that, since Bello had copied Arias, whoever wrote Shakira's version of the song also indirectly copied Arias," said the judge.
Bello denied that there was any infringement but damages and entitlements will be drawn up. Presently, details have yet to be determined.
Bello stressed that the inspiration for the song were memories of his stepfather's home as well as his relationship with his ex-wife, noted the NY Post. He explained that his background varied greatly from his previous partner -- he said he was significantly less wealthy compared to her.
In related news, Shakira is widely rumored to be expecting her second child with boyfriend, Spanish footballer Gerard Pique. During her 2014 World Cup performance, many noted the singer's outfit was more conservative than her usual costumes. It also covered the singer's mid-area sparking rumors of a second pregnancy. She wore a red dress during the closing ceremony but looks to have toned down the belly dancing and sultry moves.
While the star hasn't addressed the rumors, BreatheCast noted how the Latina has been taking time off her music with many citing this as a possible R&R in relation to her alleged pregnancy.
Mirror UK cited how Colombian singer Carlos Vives described Shakira as "pregnant and very happy" while attending an awarding ceremony in Florida.
The 37-year-old and Pique already has a 1-year-old son, Milan. Shakira has openly expressed her desire to have a big family with about eight children.
