Of the wide array of televised award shows, none come close to meeting the level of controversial and erratic showmanship that the MTV Video Music Awards does. At any given time, a spectacle can emerge that has the audience wondering if it was preplanned or simply spontaneous. Though not many acts can top the infamous Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson wardrobe 'malfunction' at the Superbowl, that doesn't stop the VMA's from trying.
We've complied a list of the 'Top 5' most shocking moments in the VMA's history. Whether it was an unexpected kiss, an unintentional instrument accident or just a crazy overall performance, we've got it all.
Who's the Real Slim Shady?
Before Eminem was media shy, he put on one of the greatest performances in VMA history. Shady walked out in the audience followed by dozens of 'imposter Slim Shady's.' The crowd went wild and Eminem forever cemented himself as one of music's top performers. Since then Eminem has gone on to sell more records than any current musician out there.
An Unexpected Kiss
Back in 2003, it wasn't as common as it is now to see two women kissing on television. In a spirited act of defiance, Madonna grabbed the face of fellow performer Britney Spears and gave her a kiss she'd never forget. We all remember how our parents' jaws dropped, and Justin Timberlake looked like a deer caught in the headlights.
Sorry Taylor, Beyoncé Should Have Won
Taylor Swift was still a rising star when she won the award for best music video of the year. Kanye West ran out of nowhere to highjack the microphone and take a second to tell America who really should have won. The act was so rude that even President Obama commented on Kanye's action. In all fairness, "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)" really is one of the greatest music videos of all time.
Bass to the Face
For those old enough to remember, Nirvana used to rule the world. In their 1992 VMA performance, things got a little out of control as their bassist chucked his instrument high in the air. It's obvious that he wasn't a baseball star because the bass came straight down and nearly knocked him unconscious. The performance got a little rowdy after that, with Kurt Cobain diving on top of the drum set.
Bye Bye Disney
If America didn't already know that Miley Cyrus was no longer Hannah Montana, then they sure did after her VMA performance last year. Miley decided to twerk all over Robin Thicke, who didn't seem to mind at all. We can only surmise that his wife did not feel the same way.
