Swimmer Amy Van Dyken-Rouen who got paralyzed from waist down in an ATV accident last June, has taken her first few steps and was already able to stand up two months after the accident.
Fox Sports said that the 41-year-old champion felt "1,000 times better" after she was discharged from a Colorado rehabilitation hospital last week.
In video posts on her Instagram page, Van Dyken-Rouen shared how she stood up and took her first steps with the assistance of a walker. The videos were captioned "Standing up for the first time on my own in 2 1/2 months. Here it is...I'm WALKING!!! #onestepatatime #itcouldhappen"
In a report, USA Today said that the swimmer is also being aided by a bionic device called "exoskeleton" to make her stand and walk better and faster.
Two months ago, Van Dyken-Rouen got paralyzed from the waist down when she got thrown off from an all-terrain vehicle in Arizona. She said that she initially did not feel anything on her toes and legs after the incident.
Initial police report said that the swimmer was thrown more than a meter off her ATV after she hit a curb at a restaurant parking lot. She was later discovered lying on the pavement next to the vehicle.
AP mentioned that a witness who was driving without a helmet helped the swimmer after the accident.
A Chron report earlier said that she was immediately airlifted to Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center where she underwent a spine surgery. After the operation, her family said that she went back to her normal spunky self although she still had to undergo therapy after going under the knife.
Fox Sports said that the swimmer is already feeling movement in her belly button and is now hoping that she can feel her legs soon.
Van Dyken-Rouen has bagged four gold medals (50m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 4×100m freestyle relay, and 4×100m medley relay,) during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and also won two gold medals in the relay events at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Sports Reference reported that Van Dyken-Rouen has been swimming professionally since 1994 with her being later inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
She is also known for spitting into the lanes of her biggest opponents. Van Dyken-Rouen was also invited for an interrogation after her name got dragged into the steroids scandal that also involved basepall player Barry Bonds and track and field athlete Marion Jones.
For now, the athlete has been giving updates about her condition to her fans and supporters through her social media accounts. She also documented how supportive her family is with her recovery.
