A father in Texas publicly humiliated his son after he learned that the latter was a bully.
Joe Legares made his son stand on the street corner holding up a sign which reads, "I am a bully. Honk if you hate bullies". This is how he chose to discipline his fourth-grader when he learned that his son was bullying other kids at school. It seems that he made his son have a taste of his own medicine.
Many parents criticize Mr. Legares for his action with some of them saying that he has gone too far. In order to show that he is serious, he also stood at the corner with his own sign that read, "I'm not sorry!!! Honk 2 stop bullying".
Mr. Legares told local media WWLP that he has no option but to publicly humiliate his son in order to teach him a lesson. He admitted that his son has a problem with bullying after it got him into trouble several times.
"Bullying is also a form of public humiliation. Maybe he understands that when he humiliates someone publicly that doesn't feel good. Hopefully he'll take that with him so that next time he tries to bully someone he'll think about it twice," Joe Legares told WWLP.
Meanwhile, other people commended Mr. Legares for his decision to discipline his child.
Bullying is one of the highly-concerned issues, especially in school settings. According to the Texas Education Agency, "bullying occurs when a person is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength."
National statistics on bullying cited that around "160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of attack or intimidation by other students". So far, there is no concrete statistics on bullying in Texas as many cases still go unreported.
