The sports agency of music superstar, Jay Z, has now acquired a license to promote boxing events.
Founded in April 2013, Roc Nation Sports has quickly made its mark in the sports world as it now ventures into a new sport: boxing.
An ESPN report noted that Roc Nation Sports is aiming to make a difference in the boxing sport business.
"There's no question the sport of boxing needs a new player, someone who can do something different," said Michael Yormark, the president and chief of branding and strategy of Roc Nation.
The sports agency, according to ESPN, started making headlines with the endorsement of big stars in the sporting world like basketball star Kevin Durant and quarterback Geno Smith, whose contracts are worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Roc Nation reportedly has not yet signed any boxers but has started their effort by acquiring boxing executive, David Itskowitch, to head the boxing division. According to Sports Illustrated, Itskowitch formerly worked for Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions as COO for more than 5 years. The same article added that he also worked under HBO Sports senior vice president Lou DiBella.
"This is a serious business for us moving forward, and Dave has one of the great reputations in the boxing industry," Yormark told ESPN.
He added that hiring Itskowitch is a clear statement that they want to do business the right way.
"This is an opportunity for us to change the game. It's been in the works for the last six or eight months, and now we are making our move. Jay Z has an incredible passion for boxing. We want to take the platform we've created and bring that to the boxing industry. We want to bring more money and visibility to the sport and give the boxers opportunities outside the ring," Yormark added.
For his part, Itskowitch mentioned that the sports agency has expressed its willingness to work with any promoter, TV network and manager.
"We're starting with a clean slate. One of boxing's biggest problems is that the audience is getting older, but we have an infrastructure that can reach younger fans. We believe that is something we can do based on what we already have in place," Itskowitch explained.
It was also explained, in the ESPN report, that the agency's goal is to reap success for the boxers it will sign.
"We will be able to build brands for these boxers and build their careers outside of the ring. That's the difference that Roc Nation will bring to this sport," Yormark noted.
Roc Nation, as far as Itskowitch is concerned, will primarily function as a promoter but he said that their job will not end on a particular fight night as he claimed that they will promote boxers all year round.
