The final book of the much-loved "Hunger Games" series was split into two for its movie adaptation: Mockingjay Part 1 and Mockingjay part 2. To assure fans that the motion pictures are worth the wait, director Francis Lawrence spoke about the distinctiveness and fluidity of the two films.
The final book highlights the role of Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, in the brewing rebellion. With such a tense and seemingly broken Katniss and the complicated times ahead, coming from a second round of The Games to losing Peeta, the director explained:
"There's definitely some battles. There's some of the first glimpses of real war in this movie. And the scale gets quite big," hinted Francis via Entertainment Weekly. "There's an atonal shift from some of the last movies, but they're still very emotional, very sweeping, [on a] grand scale with some levity and humor."
He does however emphasize that there won't be any major detours from the story of the book, written by author Suzanne Collins. The team of screenwriters have surprises in store for audiences.
"Instead of changing the plot and changing characters what we did was have the opportunity to show scenes that could have been happening at different times in the book," Francis explained to EW. "For us it's world expansion instead of changing things. I think it's exciting for the fan to see certain things. So we've been able to open the world up in this and see some new places. We get to see some new districts this time and the scope gets quite large."
Exactly where the book was split for the film is unknown but what the 43-year-old director did reveal was that the division between the two stories is "going to be one of the really good surprises," he said. The "Catching Fire" director also described the two films as having "two different, very distinct stories."
Francis explained that having a discernible divide between the two was a great motive for his team. "This is where the meaning of the entire series comes into play. The answer to why these books exist exists in Mockingjay, and that's really been exciting to me. That's been kind of what I've hung on to through these stories," quoted the EW.
The cast of the film include Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore, Donald Sutherland, Liam Hemsworth and Elizabeth Banks. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" drops in theaters November 21, 2014, with the second part to be released in 2015.
