While the American public has grown a bit tired of the typical remakes of classic superhero movies, Marvel is delving deeper into lesser-known comic book stories. The recent mass success of Guardians of the Galaxy has shown Marvel that audiences enjoy variation in comic book story telling. GOTG was wildly different than most Marvel films in the way that it didn't try to take itself so seriously.

Marvel's next project, Ant-Man, began shooting today in San Francisco. The Ant-Man character is reserved for the die-hard comic fans, as the rest of us must quickly look up his back-story on Wikipedia. In short, Ant-Man has the ability to change his size, which is a seemingly handy skill.

Paul Rudd has been cast as Scott Lang, also known as Ant-Man. In the comic series, Lang stole the suit from its creator, Hank Pym, in an attempt to save his daughter from a rare heart disorder. Pym later encouraged Lang to keep the suit and become a full-time super hero. Michael Douglas will play Hank Pym, a biologist and the suits creator.

It's unclear what saga of the Ant-Man comics will be portrayed in the film. Originally the screenplay was written by Edgar Wright, but due to conflicts with Marvel, Wright left the project. The loss is seemingly a huge blow to the film due to Wright's brilliance and creativity when it comes to filmmaking. Wright has an amazing cult following due to his unique brand of comedy stemming from Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs.The World.

Shooting for Ant-Man will wrap up in San Francisco over the coming weeks and move on to the Pinewood Studio in Atlanta, Georgia.

At first glance, Paul Rudd seems like an interesting (if not odd) choice for the role of a superhero. Rudd excels at comical roles, so fans should expect a performance similar to Chris Pratt in GOTG. Pratt's humor was essential to the film in the way that it brought Star-Lord to life. Most superhero portrayals are bland and lack most human qualities, so look for the new trend of Marvel films to engage the audience from a different angle.
