One of the most legendary leading ladies of Hollywood, Lauren Bacall, passed away on Tuesday. She was 89. 

Bacall passed away from a stroke in her home in Dakota, reports Yahoo.

Time Magazine recalls how the iconic star began her career as a model in New York City. She became a cover girl of Harper's Bazaar at the young age of 19. Slim Hawks, wife of director Howard Hawks, was reportedly impressed when she saw Bacall on the cover. She was then called in for a screen test and that was the start of the many films she made in her lifetime.

Aside from her sexy, throaty voice, Time noted that Bacall was known for her trademark "look." She pursued a Broadway career and her stellar portrayals on stage won her multiple awards. She grabbed the Tony Awards for her memorable roles in "Woman of the Year" and "Applause."

No matter how momentous the mark she left in Hollywood, it remained ironic why she did not win any Oscar in her run but she got an honorary award in 2009, Time added.

According to Yahoo Movies, Bacall shared an 11-year-marriage with another Hollywood actor, Humphrey Bogart, and they were also a hit when it comes to their onscreen team ups. Their names as a couple were included in a 1981 hit song "Key Largo," which features a line that says, "We had it all, just like Bogie and Bacall."

After Bogart passed away due to esophageal cancer in 1957 at the age of 57, Bacall reportedly had a romantic relationship with Frank Sinatra which did not work out.

The actress then tied the knot with another actor, Jason Robards, in 1961 but divorced in 1969, Yahoo Movies added. They had one son named Sam Robards.
