While the storyline and actors may have come and gone, Bay has been the one constant in the "Transformers" franchise but that may all change.

Has the time of Michael Bay with the "Transformers" come to and end? It seems from what the famed action director has been saying, he's ready to pass the torch onto someone else.

During an interview with USA Today, the 49-year-old director indicated that he may not be returning for the fifth installment of the franchise.

"There's kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make," quoted the outlet of the director. It is believed he is looking at another project that tells the story of elephant poaching. He continued, "I have a lot of stories to tell. And it's about flexing new muscles."

This is not new as Bay has made comments about "Transformers 5" in the past. Collider recalled the words of the filmmaker during the junket of "Age of Extinction" when Bay said:

"They are so fu*king hard to make. They're hard. 4,000 people worked on [Age of Extinction], and it's every day for two years, seven days a week... How long can you do Transformers, you know what I'm saying?  And after you see this movie, you think, 'Well what the hell am I going to do next?'"

While Bay may be vacating his chair, it's still a mystery who would take over his place. According to Rope of Silicon, Jonathan Liebsman may be the man for the job. Liebsman's newest project is "Teenage of Mutant Ninja Turtles" under Bay's Platinum Dunes and has been noted to share a similar directing style to Bay.

Whoever takes the reigns from Bay has got a pair of pretty big shoes to fill. The new film which presumably still stars Mark Wahlberg is due out in 2016 and is part of a highly successful and much-loved franchise. The latest installment which featured a new cast and ushered the new phase of "Transformers" subtitled, "Age of Extinction" has just passed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

For those who have seen all of the "Transformers" film, the last one has definitely pushed the envelope into what can be done. There are a lot of possibilities in terms of helming the fifth film and whoever is going to be directing has got both eyes and pressure all on him or her.

"Transformers 5" doesn't have a final script but ROS notes screenplay writer Ehren Kruger will be returning to pen the film.
