Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies' "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" exceeded all expectations when it garnered $65 million domestically and $29 million overseas, bringing the total to about $97 million worldwide during its opening weekend. "Turtle Power" proved to be strong enough to dethrone Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" by taking the top rank during this weekend's box office.
With the success of the first film, it isn't unexpected that a sequel is already in the works, with a 2016 release date penned for the film. According to CinemaBlend.com, Paramount has announced that they are working on the film's sequel that will hit theaters June 3, 2016. That would be another film in less than two years and a short timeline would indicate, per the site, that a story may already be established.
The film, which premiered domestically on August 8, is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Noel Fisher, Danny Woodburn, William Fichtner, Abby Elliott, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Alan Ritchson and Minae Noji. The story is based on Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman's created characters.
Deadline reported that "Transformers" leader, Michael Bay, will be returning to produce the sequel along with Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Additionally, "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" writers, Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, will also be writing the sequel, but it is still a big question mark if director Liebesman will be coming back to direct it.
"Launching a new take on the Turtles into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the Turtles, while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before," said Adam Goodman, President of Paramount's Film Group, in a statement via Deadline. "The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story."
According to the Liberty Voice, parents who grew up watching the cartoon series in their youth were propelled by nostalgia and seemed to have brought their kids to see the flick as a family. "There is a surprising amount of humor in the flick, also, which creates a nice balance," assessed the site.
Recognizing this trend, 'It's odd when you have 25- to 35-year-olds and then 7- to 12-year-olds really excited about the same film,' said Megan Colligan, Paramount's head of domestic marketing and distribution, as quoted by Daily Mail UK.
