On Saturday night, Brandon Rios went home with a disqualification win against Diego Chaves, in a nine-round fight at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
Rios, despite emerging as winner, had to be rushed to the hospital because of a potential corneal abrasion, shoulder injury and dizziness, Yahoo Sports reported.
The American boxer said that Chaves kept on "sticking his glove right into my eye." Chaves reportedly was deducted a few points during the third and seventh rounds of the fight and was eventually disqualified during the ninth round because he threw an elbow on Rios' face.
Rios, on the other hand, was also deducted a point in the fifth round because of what Chavez claimed as an attack at the middle of his back, Yahoo Sports added.
Chaves said that it was a foul move from Rios. He reportedly pulled his shirt up to show the evidence of his bruises.
"He kept f---ing grabbing my head," Rios said. "He would give me a headlock and go like that with his thumb (put his glove to Rios' face and attempt to thumb him in the eye). What could I do?" Chaves said during a post-fight press conference.
Yahoo Sports noted that the Argentine fighter, Chaves, was leading by a point on two of the judges' scorecards when the fight was stopped by referee Vic Drakulich.
For his part, Rios was also dismayed with how the fight went.
"I wanted to show everybody that I was still here. I don't even know if I was winning or not. Chaves had tremendous skills but, come on man. If you want to fight, let's fight, just don't fight dirty," Rios told ESPN.
It was also noted by ESPN that the referee "did not properly communicate" with both of the fighters. He reportedly did not explain why points had to be deducted, with Chaves saying that he was clueless why the fight had to be stopped.
"No, truly I don't know. Because for nine of the 10 rounds, or whatever we fought, I was taking head-butts and rabbit punches. I don't know what I did," Chaves was quoted by ESPN as saying.
Chaves was clearly disappointed and angry since he had a hard time entering the U.S. just to arrive in time for the fight. According to ESPN, the Argentine fighter is calling for a rematch.
"It was a dirty fight and [Rios] made it dirty. They think he's a big shot and that he's a big guy. But truthfully, I was teaching him. And I think it's unjust the way that I was disqualified. I was hitting him comfortably whenever I wanted to. I want to fight again with Brandon Rios. But truthfully, they need to change the referee because this was a disgrace what happened to me," Chaves told ESPN.
