Hit CBS show, "The Big Bang Theory," was supposed to begin production on July 31, but with the show's five biggest stars without re-negotiated contracts, production was suspended.
Warner Brothers Television Studio and CBS are trying to iron out new deals for original cast and headline characters played by Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar.
The good news for anxious fans is that a new production date has been set a week later, indicating that negotiations are expected to be finalized soon. The team was supposed to begin working on July 31 with a scheduled table read but according to Deadline, the date has been moved to August 6.
The site continues to note that as it stands, "there is no danger of Big Bang not being able to make its hourlong premiere on September 22." Even with the one week delay, the shortening of episodes may be avoided with adjustments in scheduled breaks or production extension.
Based on history, The Wrap recalled that prolonged contract negotiations aren't new. Previous examples of extended TV negotiations include "Seinfeld" and "Friends," which all took home $1 million per episode during their last season. "Modern Family" also had a much talked about production delay due to contract negotiations.
The core cast, namely Parsons, Galecki and Cuoco are said to be looking to triple their take home pay from $350,000 per episode to $1 million in addition to back-end deals, indicated The Hollywood Reporter. On the other hand Helberg and Nayyar are also looking to increase their pay which presently stands at $100,000 per episode.
Supporting cast, Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik, are the only cast members who have signed their contracts that include a hefty salary increase.
According to Variety, it is hoped that deals will be lined up and signed by Sunday or Monday, in time for Wednesday's rescheduled table reading.
CBS has renewed the series for an additional three seasons, and this means that the show will make it to its 10th season. CBS would definitely need to iron out this contract dispute to ensure continued success. "The Big Bang Theory" show is a highly-rated sitcom and is the cash cow of the network.
The stars have also been recognized for their performances, especially Parsons, who has won a number of awards for his role as neurotic, socially awkward but brilliant scientist, Sheldon Cooper. Parsons is already a three-time Emmy winner for this "Big Bang" role and has also been nominated for this year.
Catch "The Big Bang Theory" as it returns for its 8th season on September 22.
